It demonised the Romans, then it demonised the Muslims, then it demonised the Renaissance artists, then it demonised women who did not behave according to narrow “Christian” principles. We have seen demonisation of alchohol, of pornography, of gambling and any number of quite enjoyable activities. More recently, single mothers, women who seek abortions and homosexuals have been demonised. Scientists have been demonised since Galileo’s time and today anyone involved in stem cell research or genetic manipulation is likely to be demonised too.
