Over 3,000 years ago, Jeremiah wrote to the Hebrew people when they were living as slaves in exile in Babylon, “In whatever town you find yourself living, seek the peace of that town, for in its peace, you will have peace.” This admonition applies to us, today, in a powerful way. Some Christians think all they’ve got to do in the world is be religious! But since every Believer in Christ is “in exile” from Home in Heaven [1 Peter 2.11], we must ALSO do all that is within our power to bring peace into whatever community in which we find ourselves “exiled”! This may be an ancient calling, but it’s Jesus’ heart for us today as well as in the Prophet Jeremiah’s troubled times.

Many people don’t realize that (according to the Bible) the means or methods by which mankind worships God has changed fundamentally more than once through the ages. Oddly enough, one of the most prevalent styles of worship in today’s Protestant churches began during the Babylonian Captivity of the Jews. Today, though, we have available to us a much freer, more intimate style of worship — centered around the Loving Presence of God in each of our lives!

About 150 years ago, Soren Kierkegaard, a severe critic of the official state church in Denmark, said that the task of the True Church is to arrest a man, incorporate him into the Church (the Body of Christ) and prepare him for his place of ministry within the Body of Christ according to however God so chooses. One of the greatest sources of confusion in the world today is that too many people, going about as “Christians”, have never submitted to being arrested by Jesus Christ!

Some people today think they’re “O.K. with God” because there Grandma has a deep, personal faith in God and prays for them always. Grandmas or Mothers who do this are truly “saints” — but whatever their prayers may do, it won’t make a person right with God. Eternal Life doesn’t come from religion and it doesn’t come from faithful parents — it only comes to the people who trust in Jesus for Eternal Life and come to know God personally — intimately — for themselves. As John the Beloved wrote, “THIS is Life Eternal — that you KNOW God and He Who He sent!”

Jesus makes it powerfully clear that He is not in the least engaged with the religious games many people play in His Name. In Jerusalem so many years ago, He even likened the spiritual leaders of His day to foolish children playing senseless religious, street games. His conclusion: He doesn’t care if you study Him, talk about Him, even “serve” what you think He wants. He said He doesn’t want “servants” — He wants friends. He wants you to turn the eyes of your heart onto Him and begin to know Him — personally and intimately, for therein ONLY lies life eternal.

Whether it was a nightmare or a pizza dream, I never decided, but late in the night I dreamed that I “awoke” to find that all of the church buildings in our community had disappeared during the night — clear, empty, grass covered plots of land as if the churches had never existed. And in the dream, I strove to discern in what, significant ways our community might suffer with the loss of these buildings and their pastors.
