The word, “missional” has been in circulation within the ecclesiastical world for at least thirty years. However, the meaning of this word has been so diversified that for years that I hardly even consider using it. The churches that I pastor or advise are known more as ‘Attractional’ churches rather then ‘Missional’ churches.

When Timothy Leary coined the ’60s counterculture phrase, “Turn on, tune in, drop out,” he wasn’t just advocating free love and lots of drugs. Leary wanted people to meditate as a way to turn on the mind, tune in the world and drop out from negativity. Forty years later, mainstream interest in meditation has been replaced by the promise of connectivity through technology. Today we’re communicating with more people from more places, more often. But are we helpful neighbors in the global village or more like time-crunched techno-geeks who “data drop” rather than reach out?

In the Buddhist tradition, maitri is a process of developing loving-kindness and an unconditional friendship with ourselves. Often when people start meditating, they approach the practice with excitement and eagerness, confident they’re undertaking a project that’s as positive as quitting smoking or getting fit. But meditation isn’t measured like educational or physical progress. There’s no final step or tangible benchmark that proves you’re a good meditator or an outstanding spiritual warrior. There will be good days and bad days; meditation invites us to sit with the shakiness of uncomfortable feelings.

Consequences are a natural part of life, good or bad. They are a direct result of our actions and attitudes. Should we expect anything less of a holy, perfect, Almighty God when it comes to our relationship with Him and His covenant of mercy and love?

What a liberating truth it is that one right – that to be wrong – stands with God, and we with it are blessed. Central to this premise is the fact of our sin. We celebrate not the sin, but the Saviour – Jesus smashing our sin like we smash our pride.

Creator’s love for Man is not easily described. To live fully in Joy, is Creator’s plan for us. I recall days in the meadows and gardens when the buzz of the bees and flying Ones hummed through visits to the flowers and trees.

I am not very passionate about eschatology (i.e. concern for the last things). I accept God’s will for these times and events, those coming or to come; that’s my general position.
