Yom Kippur is a holiday in the Jewish religion and is traditionally known as the ‘Day Of Atonement’. It is widely regarded as the most sacred of all the Jewish holidays. Occurring at the end of a 10 day period known as the ‘Days Of Repentance’ that begins with the holiday of Rosh Hashanah and ends with Yom Kippur. The holiday is marked by a full day’s fast beginning with sundown on the night before the holiday known as “Yom Kippur Eve” and concluding at sundown on Yom Kippur followed by a ritual feast.

I am grateful for my chair, the table I am sitting at, pens, paper, my computer, the printer, my camera, the phone, and all the cords that help them work, my journal, my coffee cup, the table cloth, my warm fuzzy slippers and robe. Each one of these I can follow deeper, finding even more things to be grateful for – like the electricity in my home and the recycled pop bottles that are now the fleece robe I am wearing.

Without doubt one of the most common things people in church experience is that uncanny sense of deja vu when a pastor or speaker preaches. What does he really know? What is he really saying?

Where are you? Do you honestly have any idea? It matters not if you can tell me the town, state, country, or even the street address where you currently reside. I am talking about where you exist in in the cosmic scheme of things? More than that, how conscious are you? Conscious enough, if your identity were stripped away, who would you be? Same person, you say? I don’t think so.

Spiritual unity and oneness may be things we believe in and aspire to, but how manifest are they in how we think, feel, behave and live. Do these ideals of spirituality effect the way we view our moment to moment lives or are they abstract ideals that we share in like minded company? When things don’t go our way, or when we see suffering and destruction in the world, how do we reconcile them with spiritual unity and oneness?

Do you see something in your community that needs to be done? Are you thinking that you might be willing to undertake this accomplishment? Well, that’s good. We need people who are willing to step up to the plate and take a swing at getting something done. I ventured a guess that all communities need such persons.

Many times people get an image of our Lord being way up yonder somewhere in the sky. Occasionally, He will take a quick glance down to earth to make sure we’re not being naughty.He sits beside His Father with arms folded ready to toss lightning bolts.

What is it that you desire? Wanting something keeps you wanting the very thing you want over and over again as if you believe you do not have it. Desire is the passion that guides us to what it is we are to create. When we hold back the river’s flow, the flow of love, we tend to run and hide in fear from our light. Some say that this is being afraid of our greatness. Passion is the purpose of life…

John, in his writings, is dealing with crucial matters, which many of us are facing today, because these matters and issues have consequences which influence so many areas of life.
